Option 1: split evenly
$186.40 bill, 20% tip, 4 people: tip = $37.28, total = $223.68, each pays $55.92.
That’s exactly what the TipCalc Lab calculator does — enter the bill, pick a tip, set “Split between.”
Option 2: itemized split (proportional tax & tip)
Each person pays their own food, plus a share of tax and tip in proportion to what they ordered.
Example: $120.00 subtotal, 8.25% tax ($9.90), 20% tip on the pre-tax subtotal ($24.00).
| Person | Ordered | Tax share | Tip share | Pays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alex | $50.00 | $4.13 | $10.00 | $64.13 |
| Sam | $40.00 | $3.30 | $8.00 | $51.30 |
| Jo | $30.00 | $2.48 | $6.00 | $38.48 |
| Total | $120.00 | $9.90 | $24.00 | $153.90 |
Rounded to the cent, individual amounts can be off by a penny from the total — someone covers the extra cent.
The one-step multiplier
Add tax rate + tip rate to 1, then multiply each person’s subtotal by it. Here: 1 + 0.0825 + 0.20 = 1.2825. Alex: $50 × 1.2825 = $64.13.
Tips for group dinners
- Shared appetizers or bottles: split those evenly first, then add each person’s own items.
- Large parties often have automatic gratuity (commonly 18–20%) — check the receipt before adding another tip.
- Decide on even vs itemized before ordering to avoid awkwardness later.
- One person pays, everyone else sends their share by payment app — use the per-person number from the calculator.
FAQ
Is it rude to ask for separate checks?
Not usually, but for big groups many restaurants prefer one check. Ask at the start of the meal, not when the bill arrives.
Should the tip be split evenly too?
In an even split, yes. In an itemized split, split the tip in proportion to what each person ordered — it’s the fairest approach.
How do I split a bill unevenly with TipCalc Lab?
Use the calculator to get the tip on the full bill, then multiply each person’s subtotal by (1 + tax rate + tip rate) as shown above.
Does the calculator store my bill?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and never sent anywhere.
